My eldest daughter is obsessed by chocolate milkshakes, however, have you ever read the ingredients of some of the commercial milkshake syrups and powders you can buy? It’s scary! She particularly likes a well known US brand of chocolate syrup for making chocolate milk, called Hershey’s. Yup we have all heard of it! But here in the UK it is hard to find. So after a bit of trial and error, we made our own ‘clone’ recipe, it is very similar to the original Hershey’s taste and what is even better, it doesn’t just mean we can make it ourselves for about half the price but, it is all natural too!
- 125g cocoa powder (make sure it’s real cocoa and not a cheapy hot chocolate drink mix)
- 420g sugar
- 500ml water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- Add all the ingredients into a high sided pan (you’ll see why soon!) except the vanilla extract and whisk together.
- Place the pan on a moderate heat and start to heat through whilst you whisk, make sure everything is dissolved and mixed together.
- Bring up to the boil and allow the chocolatey mix to boil for at least 3 minutes, the mixture will thicken slightly. As the mix boils it will rise in volume (a lot!) so this is why you use a high sided pan 😉
- Once the mix has boiled for at 3 minutes, take off the heat to allow the mix to settle. Whisk again once settled. The mix should be glossy and slightly thicker than it was before it was heated but still quite watery.
- Allow the mix to cool for 30 minutes and the mix will thicken as it cools. Once cooled pour into a glass bottle and store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
- To use the chocolate syrup for chocolate milk, depends on how chocolatey you like your milkshakes. We have 200ml glasses here at home and we add 2 teaspoons of syrup for 200ml of milk. You can use more or less depending on how you want it.
